NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has received the postmortem report in the murder case of Swiss national Nina Berger. The report says the woman was strangled with an iron chain and that the death was homicidal.
“Asphyxia by constriction of the neck (strangulation) with iron chain and assisted by masking of the face by a polythene bag led to suffocation,” a source quoted the report as saying. The killer used two iron chains – one to secure her hands, which caused bruises on her arms, and the other to strangle her.
TOI had reported on October 22 that the victim had been strangled to death.
The alleged murderer, Gurpreet Singh, has proved a tough nut to crack for the cops. “He initially claimed he murdered her when she refused to marry him. He then changed his statement several times,” a police source said. “Singh then confessed that he killed Berger after she failed to pay him over Rs 7 lakh for rituals and occult practices he had performed at her home in Switzerland. When she finally gave him his money, Singh took her in his car on the pretext of occult practice and murdered her.”
Delhi Police had conducted psychoanalysis tests on Singh and found him showing signs of “disturbed behaviour”.
Police are trying to identify other foreigners Singh might have been in contact with. Initially, the accused had told the cops that he was in touch with foreigners in connection with the gems and astrology business run by his father. However, police have not taken his claims at face value and are corroborating his versions with available evidence.
Berger was killed on October 18 in a Santro car. She had met Singh in 2021 through a dating website when the latter was visiting relatives in Switzerland. Delhi Police had filed two cases, one for murder and another under the Arms Act for possession of firearms against Singh. The cops had also sent a questionnaire to Berger’s family via the Swiss embassy seeking information about the victim.
Police said so far they have not been able to contact the accused’s father, who is believed to be in a foreign country.
