During 2022, Uber trips covered as many as 4.5 billion kilometres – the distance from Earth to Neptune, the last planet in the solar system – in 123 Indian cities. The company, however, refused to share the break-up of the number of trips done in each city, saying the data was “sensitive”.
Delhi-NCR also had the highest number of office-hour trips, which showed how the capital and the satellite towns chose to travel to their office and back. Interestingly, most Uber trips were booked between 5pm and 6pm, implying that people preferred taking cabs from workplace to home rather than while going to office.
According to the cab aggregators’ annual study on how India moved in 2022, Indians spent 11 billion minutes traveling in Ubers, getting to where they wanted.
Contrary to the popular perception that Delhi is a crowded city and witnesses long traffic snarls, Uber’s study showed that in terms of the fastest average speeds clocked on the roads, Delhi-NCR was only second to Chandigarh. That’s perhaps because the capital is connected to the neighbouring towns of Gurugram , Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad with high-speed and wide national highways conducive to a fast and a smooth drive, especially during the non-peak hours.
Hyderabad tops the list of cities slowest in terms of average speed clocked by cabs, followed by Chennai and Bengaluru.
The analysis further revealed that Saturday emerged as the most popular day of the week for booking a cab.
When it comes to intercity routes, the maximum bookings came for Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Nashik section followed by Delhi-Agra, Jaipur-Chandigarh and Lucknow-Kanpur.
The study further revealed that the Delhiites didn’t shy away from taking a Uber on long intercity routes. Among top five longest intercity routes done by Uber cabs, four – Purnia, Madhubani, Varanasi and Ahmedabad – originated from Delhi.
The average speed in Chandigarh in 2022 was recorded at 27.2 km per hour while Delhi-NCR was marginally behind at 27.1kmph. Kolkata recorded the lowest average speed at 19.5kmph followed by Guwahati (20.4kmph) and Bengaluru (21.7kmph).
