New Delhi: A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan has been suspended after a 22-year-old intoxicated man scaled the perimeter wall of Indira Gandhi International airport and reached the taxiway on Saturday night. After a pilot spotted the intruder, he was arrested and sent to judicial custody.
The incident took place a day after Republic Day celebrations when security agencies were on high alert.TOI had reported on Sunday that security of Delhi airport was breached and the intruder was held. A CISF official said an inquiry is under way in the matter.
A senior CISF official said the accused scaled the boundary wall from the Dwarka side and reached near the taxiway around 11.30 pm. The pilot who spotted him alerted Air Traffic Control (ATC). The man was later handed over to Delhi Police.
The height of the boundary wall was about eight feet and the man even managed to jump over the two-feet high barbed wire fencing on top of the wall. He suffered some cuts as he jumped over the wall.
“However, the Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) for this wall was deactivated at the time the intrusion happened as construction of a drain was under way on the other side of the wall. The jawan who was on patrolling duty near this boundary wall was suspended on Sunday for dereliction of duty,” said a CISF official.
Police said they received a complaint from CISF about the unauthorized entry to the airside on Jan 27 night. He was caught by the CISF and handed over to police. The accused was identified as Ibrahim, a native of Teh-Tauru in Haryana. A case under 447 (criminal trespass) of IPC and Section 22 of Aircraft Security Rules, 2023, was registered at the airport police station. “During inquiry, it was found that the accused was a smack addict,” police said.
