NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday alleged that some of its leaders, including MLAs and councillors, were either placed under house arrest or detained. The party also claimed that its volunteers were prevented from participating in a protest outside the BJP headquarters in Delhi.
The protest, attended by Delhi chief minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, is in response to the alleged “cheating” in Tuesday’s Chandigarh mayoral polls, which BJP won.
In anticipation of both the AAP’s demonstration and a protest by the BJP against “corruption” in the Kejriwal government, security measures were heightened in central Delhi. Roads leading to the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg were barricaded, and additional personnel were deployed.
AAP leader Gopal Rai in a press conference alleged that their party’s MLAs and councillors had been “placed under house arrest ahead of the protest.” The BJP is conducting its protest near the AAP head office, with both party offices located a few hundred meters from each other on the same road.
“Delhi assembly speaker Ram Niwas Goel and deputy mayor Aaley Mohd Iqbal have been placed under house arrest,” he said and added that “police should issue a clarification on this”.
In a post on X, Delhi CM Kejriwal wrote, “First votes were stolen in the Chandigarh mayoral elections. Now, people coming to protest peacefully against this are being stopped at various places across Delhi.”
“Across Delhi, they are detaining elected MLAs, councillors and volunteers, who were coming to the party office. What is this going on?” he wrote in another post.
Authorities have closed roads leading to the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg and erected barricades near the headquarters of both the BJP and the AAP since the morning, according to officials.
“Heavy barricading all across Delhi. Buses full of AAP volunteers being detained. Hundreds of para-military forces outside the AAP office,” read a post by Delhi minister and AAP leader Atishi on X.
The BJP swept the recentally held Chandigarh mayoral polls, retaining all three posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor.
