NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old woman was killed after the scooter she was riding on was hit by a speeding car that allegedly dragged her for around 4-5 km. The horrific incident took place in northwest Delhi’s Khanjawala area in the wee hours of Sunday.
The police have arrested five occupants of the car. The five, residents of the Sultanpuri area, were going to Murthal for night snacks, police said. The car occupants have claimed that they didn’t realise that the woman was stuck in the car. The woman, who worked at wedding functions as support staff, was returning home when the accident happened.
The 20-year-old, who was found without clothes on her body, was apparently stuck in the wheels on the co-driver’s side. As per initial reports, she was stuck in a way that her legs were stuck in the tyre on the rear side and her face was towards the wheel on the co-driver’s side. Police said the back of the woman was completely broken, her ribs were visible and she had sustained serious injuries on forehead, hands and legs.
According to the police, a call was received at 3.24am at Kanjhawala police station, saying that “a grey-colour Baleno car moving towards Qutubgarh had a body attached to the wheels”. The caller had also noted down the car number. Immediately police personnel deployed at police pickets on the car route were alerted and a wireless message was flashed to trace the vehicle.
The police control room received another call at 4.11am about a woman found lying on the road. On reaching the spot, police called in the crime and forensics teams. The woman was taken to the hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. Later, the occupants of the vehicle were traced who stated that the car met with an accident in the Sultanpuri area.
Meanwhile, the SHO of the area found a mangled scooter during a night patrol. “The registration number of the scooter led us to the woman. Spot inspection revealed that after the accident, the woman got entangled in the wheels of the car that dragged her for quite a distance. All the five occupants of the car have been apprehended. Further investigation is in progress,” said Harendra Singh, DCP, Outer Delhi. A case has been filed under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC .
The accused have been identified as Deepak Khanna (26), Gramin Seva auto driver; Amit Khanna (25), who worked in a bank on a contract basis in Uttam Nagar; Krishan (27), who worked at Spanish Culture Centre in CP; Mithun (26), a hairdresser and Manoj Mittal (27), a ration dealer. The car belonged to a relative of Amit Khanna’s friend.
“They said they were going on a narrow lane and a girl, approaching on her scooter, met with an accident. Since no one raised an alarm, they kept driving. It was later they realised that something was stuck in the car wheel and saw a woman’s body after driving for a few kilometres. They removed the body from the car and fled from the scene,” said an official privy to the investigation. Police have taken the blood samples of the accused and are awaiting the medical report.
The woman was unmarried and lived with her family in Sultanpuri. She is survived by her mother and five siblings. Her mother, Rekha, said, “She told me she was going for an event and will be back home at night. But we got a call in the morning informing us about the accident. I feel something wrong had happened because of the state her body was found in. She had no clothes on her.” She also informed that her daughter had met with an accident earlier too.
