CHENNAI: The sudden death of D Masthan, a former AIADMK MP who later joined DMK, last week has turned out to be a case of murder, according to police. On Friday, police arrested five people, including Imran Batcha, son-in-law of Masthan’s younger brother. “Masthan had lent Rs 15 lakh to Imran Batcha over two years. When Masthan demanded it back, Imran decided to kill him,” Tambaram police commissioner A Amalraj said.
All the five have been remanded in judicial custody.
The kingpin, Batcha, apparently watched several videos online to kill a person without raising a flag. “When Masthan demanded the money back as his son’s wedding was approaching, Imran decided to kill him,” said a police officer. As per plan, while he was driving the car, his two friends joined midway and occupied the rear seat. One of them held Masthan’s hands from behind, while the other suffocated him to death by closing nose and mouth together.
As Masthan’s hyoid bone remained intact, forensic personnel did not suspect any foulplay in his death. However, Masthan had suffered a contusion on his nose, perhaps due to his brief struggle while being strangled. This piece of evidence was probed in detail, as Masthan’s family demanded for an inquiry.
Also, Batcha said he ‘rushed’ his uncle to hospital soon after he swooned. But, teams of officers probing the case scanned CCTV cameras over a distance of 65km from Triplicane to Chengalpet, and spotted two more suspects travelling in Masthan’s car. They had got into the vehicle on the way. Cops found that another SUV was trailing Masthan’s car.
Batcha attempted to bribe the government hospital’s mortuary staff and tamper with the post-mortem report, but he could not do so as Masthan’s relatives and DMK cadres had already gathered there, said officials. When TOI contacted forensic surgeon Dr V Dekal and asked him about Masthan’s hyoid bone remaining intact, he said: “A doctor performing autopsy shall have to submit the findings to the investigation officer within 48 hours.”
