NEW DELHI: Due to the cold waves in Uttar Pradesh, schools in two districts have been closed to protect students from extremely cold temperatures. The decision to close schools was made by the District Magistrates of Bijnor and Badaun districts to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
The closure of schools has also been extended to several other states in India due to the cold-wave conditions.
For the past few days, the biting cold conditions have gripped parts of north and north-west India as the mercury plummeted several notches with cities and towns reporting maximum temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius and dense fog engulfing large tracts in Punjab and Haryana.
The mercury plunged to a minimum of 5.3 degrees Celsius in the national capital and made a slow climb as the day progressed to settle at a maximum of 16.2 degrees Celsius, a departure of five degrees from the normal temperature for the day.
Bijnor DM Umesh Mishra said that due to cold waves and dense fog, orders have been issued to keep all schools in the district closed up to eighth class while the timings for classes from 9 to 12 have been changed, now they will function from 10 am to 3 pm.
Similarly, the Badaun DM also declared a three-day holiday for all the schools from December 26 to 28, 2022.
The weather office said the cold day, cold wave conditions are expected to prevail for the next two days and abate thereafter. Dense fog conditions were likely to continue over Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan till December 27 and gradually decrease thereafter.
Meanwhile, the Bihar schools will also remain closed for students up to class 8 from today till year-end in view of cold wave conditions in Bihar’s Patna, the district magistrate said in a notice.
